Breitling SuperOcean - The Perfect Vacation Watch

We’ve all been here before; your bags are packed, you checked in for your flight, and your alarm is set. You’ve got a beach to get to, dinners to have, and long nights ahead of you. One last thing. What watches are you going to pack? What if I told you that you only needed one.

You could not have convinced me of this before my last trip to the Bahamas. Vacation can be tricky for the wrist-minded individual, and believe me when I say I care deeply about the right watch for the occasion. My rotation includes everything from a G-Shock DW-5600 for the hard work, to a Rolex DateJust for those nights out when the menu’s don’t list the price. With a new vintage inspired Breitling SuperOcean in hand I left the country, with one watch.

For starters, the new SuperOcean’s vintage vibes leave little to be desired. The fit, finish, and ability to fit in anywhere at anytime leave me with a little sadness even when I take it off at night. At its  core the SuperOcean has been beachside sports watch which historically wouldn’t be a great fit in a formal setting. It’s a trusted timepieces that in the past bordered a true “tool watch” aesthetic, this version of the SuperOcean does so much more.

The black colorway is subtle yet flashy with polished center links, polished indices, and a white chapter ring that catches the eye from across the room. When I tell you it’s appropriate for any occasion, I mean it. I wore it in the ocean, at the pool, into bars, and even while shirt and tie dining. No matter what outfit or environment I was in it just felt right. At first, I was hesitant to commit to this watch for an entire vacation considering it lacks any sort of complication aside from time itself, but while on a trip in one of the most beautiful places on earth – I did not care to know what day it was. The bracelet is brilliant with Breitlings version of “slide lock” adjustability, and the lume glowed deep into the night. This watch is the real deal.

Without being blindly biased, this watch does leave a few things to be desired for a true daily wearer. When in the real world it is nice to know the date, it’s a complication I use multiple times a day due to my “live in the moment” approach to life. I also would have loved a bit more friction in the bezel fit. I did find it turn a few times when bumped or rubbed, but I am literally splitting hairs.

To wrap this up, you would be hard pressed to find a better-looking watch in the price category. For most of us working people spending 3-5k on a watch isn’t a light decision. You’d want something to wear often and well, and I think this is right on target. Finding a dive watch worthy of a suit, and the beach is few and far between. Let me tell you you’ve found a ticker that can do both. I would know, I got married in one.
